Five Constant Factors is a lyrical exploration of images taken from footage of the Normandy invasion in 1944. It is a coming to terms with imagery I have been surrounded by throughout my life; first as a military child and later as an adult by the media and politics.
The footage harkens to a war that now seems far more justifiable yet no less horrible. I can only imagine the oddities and horrors of what these soldiers saw in battles - many who had not even left their home towns before being drafted or enlisting. In the video I extracted those strange moments and reinterpreted them through the detached goggles of aethestics.
My approach to video comes out of painting and I view it as such moving image, but filtered through the sensibilities of a painters palette.
Five Constant Factors derives its title from the Art of War by Sun Tsu. These factors are: 1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and Discipline.
